I owe an update to everyone who still follows me. The last 3 – 4 years have contained the best and worst parts of my life, some of which I’ve posted about previously, but I’m back in the saddle again after a few false starts. There was also a period of adjustment as I had two more major surgeries and months of PT, got a promotion at work, and finally went back and completed the B.S. that I was oh-so-close to having finished for far too long. (To the fair but sometimes unkind reviewer who asked if I understand that AIs are computers: Yes, as my degree is in computer and information science and I’m the business owner of a critical information system that processes millions of transactions per day. I just realized that technical depth, especially trying to project hundreds of years into the future, would detract from the story and the themes that are important to me.) I’m also starting a M.S. in software development at Boston University, which will take some time away from writing, but I have quite a bit of time during the summer and the eons that I spend on a commuter bus every week.
TL;DR: I was pulled in many directions, but have now refocused on the two careers that are important to me: engineering things that help people and writing science fiction.
Unfortunately, I still haven’t been able to publish the novella that I was invited to write in another author’s universe. It’s 100% packaged and ready to go, but … time will tell if I can ever release it. The upside to this is that I’m completely focused on Book 3, now.
I’m 20,000 words into what I expect to be about a 100,000-word novel (PL & LoP were 80k – 85k, for comparison). There are a few different (and mutually exclusive) directions with which I’m tinkering, but I’m hopeful that I’ll find the correct path. This book may very well have the most personal meaning to me out of any I will write, so I want everything to be … right.
Again, thanks to everyone who took a chance on me. I do appreciate it.
